News for Woodlawn Park Residents!
February 2014

Dear Residents,

WOW! What a winter we are having. Temperatures keep going down and down and down. We keep hearing about the Polar Vortex and every now and then we get an inch or two of snow on top of the already colder temperatures. Snow removal has been a challenge this year, but all in all I am happy with our results. When the temperatures go below 20 degrees or so, salt loses its effectiveness unless you put it on in large amounts and when doing so, everyone's grass could be harmed.

The Woodlawn Park snow removal policy is this: 2" or more of snow and TLD Services (our contractor) plows all the streets in the city. Less than  2", all of the intersections receive a salt treatment including all of our entrances. In some cases with approval from the Mayor, an additional amount of salt must be applied to the city streets within a certain temperature range. We normally wait until the upper 20's because applying salt in the teens reduces its effectiveness.

The best scenario would be to apply a brine to the streets prior to an impending snow storm. This application cost the city nearly $800. Our weather in Louisville is so unpredictable that it would need to be very certain that it will snow. Brining helps so that the snow does not stick to the streets as much- it helps tremendously when it comes time to plow because the snow does not adhere to the streets as well.

Sorry for the long-winded explanation but I thought it would be good for everyone to know about our snow removal process.

As always remember to be a good neighbor!

Stay warm, spring will be here soon!

Lost Dog Found
Image
On Friday, January 24th a resident called the Mayor asking if anyone had found a dog. The Mayor then called the Police Chief and sure enough a renter on Stivers Road had reported to our Police Chief that a very small dog was found that afternoon and that they had taken him in due to the severe cold temperatures.
I bring this up because I want to pass on to each of you that if you ever find a lost dog or one that seems roaming and out of place, please call our Police Chief Bob Heaton at 439-6545. And likewise if you are ever missing a dog, call Bob too or post it on our bulletin board on the city web site.

BLOCK WATCH meeting set for Thursday, February 6th at 7:30pm!
A note from Councilperson George Langford!

Our next Woodlawn Park block watch meeting will be held on Thursday, February 06, 2014 at 07:30pm at our City Hall. I had hoped to arrange for Kevin Mumphries, the LMPD 5th District Resource Officer, to speak, but he has another engagement that night.

As of this date every street, except for Middlebrook, has a block watch captain, and some streets have at least two. I will cover Middlebrook until we get a captain. If anyone has or knows someone who wants to join our program please have them contact me.

I am hoping that we can get someone to take over the program at our February meeting, and hopefully one of our Captains will volunteer. Like I have said in the past I do not feel that a Councilman should run the program.

Dear District 7 Resident,

The goodness of District 7 residents is the very reason I decided to get involved in public service 12 years ago. I have worked hard to represent you with the focus of placing others first, serving in a professional and respectful manner, and being accessible.

You have elected me as your Councilman three times, which I am deeply honored. After considerable thought, however, I have decided to not seek another term as your representative in order to focus on my family and my new responsibilities at the Kilgore Counseling Center. While my interest in public policy remains strong, I will continue to be engaged in public policy and I am keeping my options open for future office.

Over the years, I have worked hard to improve transparency and ethics in local government, highlight our need to be more economically competitive and improve opportunities for businesses and job creators. Working with the many suburban city Mayors, neighborhood leaders and countless staff within Metro Government, we have made improvements to some of our busiest roads, revitalized an old strip mall into a shopping destination and improved our parks system. In the coming year, I will seek to close out our work on quiet zones in the area, conclude a number of road and park projects and continue the discussion on a Local Option Sales Tax (LOST).

The opportunity to serve as your Metro Councilman has been a wonderful experience. While we have made great strides, we must continue to work hard to enhance the community's competitiveness in our regional and global economy through economic development and education initiative.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Councilman,

Ken
