Open Letter Regarding Woodlawn Park 4th of July Parade

Residents of Woodlawn Park

I have received several calls from people upset because the Woodlawn Park Parade was cancelled today.
I was even accused by one caller of having nefarious motives for cancelling the parade. I understand their disappointment. I was disappointed as well, my family was also planning to participate in the parade. Nothing but the safety and welfare of the participates entered into my decision.

My first obligation is to the safety and welfare of the residents of Woodlawn Park. As was noted on the parade info sheets, "inclement weather would cancel the parade". Having awoke this morning to rain, I started monitoring the weather conditions. Weather forecast were predicting showers and scattered thunderstorms through out the day. I met with the organizing committee at 1:00 pm and discussed options and possible cancellation (it was raining off and on at the time) of the parade. I agreed to wait until 2:00 pm to make a decision as to cancel or not. At 2:00 it started raining again, so I made the decision to cancel the parade based on this information at the time and posted the cancellation notice on the city website. As it turned out we did get a break in the weather about 3:00, but by that time it was too late to reschedule for today.

Again I know some are disappointed in that decision, for that I am sorry. But I can assure the residents of the City of Woodlawn Park for as long as I'm Mayor in the case of residents safety and welfare I will always err on the side of caution, be it popular or not.

Larry Lewis
