Dear Residents,

It has been an honor to serve as your mayor over the last 4 years! I look forward to watching and supporting Mayor-Elect Larry Lewis and the City Council as they make good things happen! I have said this before and I believe each of you play a part in our City Government- some of you take part in City Pride, many volunteer on the Block watch committee, many help clean up Westport Road, many of you support the government officials and the work they do, and even some take a role in the government.
In a nutshell, we could not be Woodlawn Park without each of you! Please continue to take a role- the city needs you!
As we close out one year and begin a new year, I would like to wish each of you and your families a very safe and joyous 2015! I am sure I will still see you around the city from time to time!

    Thanks again!

Don't forget, you can always check out and keep up with the city council monthly minutes online by clicking here!

As always remember to be a good neighbor!

2014 Report
Image
Mayor Brown handed this out at the December 15, 2014 meeting.

  • The mayor and city council positions were up for reelection in November. There is one unoccupied seat for the city Council.  A new Mayor along with the City Council will be sworn into office on December 15, 2014 and shall begin their terms on January 1, 2015.
  • Budgets are approved, published, followed and tracked on a monthly basis.  Formal audits are up to date and all receiving the highest grade available.  We continue to remain fiscally sound by being good money managers and receiving good returns on our investments.

Community & Communication
  • Newsletter: There are 165 people signed up to receive the monthly e-newsletter that is distributed by the Mayor on the 1st of every month via email.
  • City Directory: It was decided to create and distribute the city directory every other year instead of every year. The directory will be published in the even numbered years (2014, 2016, 2018 etc.)
  • Yard Sale: The annual yard sale will continue on the Saturday after Derby every year (May 9, 2015). The city received the yard sale signs as a donation from On the Move Realtors, the yard sale sponsor. Now, the city owns all the signage for the Annual Yard Sale. Junk Day will follow on the Thursday after the yard sale (May 14, 2015).
  • Welcome Committee: A committee was formed to assist with ideas of welcoming new residents to the City.
  • Block Watch: remains to be an active committee with a little over 21 volunteers.
  • City Pride: remains to be a strong program for the city. What started out as residents trying to get the “yellow” sign to appear in their yard- now has turned into a program that is making the city look better, raising property values, and supports an affirmation style of government- praising people for what they do right not condemning them for what they do wrong- it has helped city morale. Many residents have gotten involved by recommending other residents for the award. The city pride award consists of having the city pride sign up in their yard for 3 weeks and a certificate is mailed to the resident along with a brief letter signed by the Mayor.

Grounds, Streets & Lights
  • Snow Removal: In late 2014, our current vendor for snow removal notified the mayor in writing they were no longer going to be in the snow removal business. Doing due diligence the Mayor contacted Brownsboro Lawn Care, who submitted a proposal to the Mayor. The proposal was brought to the City Council where a unanimous vote took place to accept the proposal for one year. The proposal was within the current budget.
  • Lawn care & Grounds keeping:  The contract with TLD Services will expire in February 2015. Thus, bids will need to be submitted for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
  • Westport Road lawn spraying: We contracted with Trugreen to accommodate our lawn maintenance along Westport Road and each of our 6 city entrances to eliminate weeds and a healthier lawn for a more attractive look.
  • Trees: two more trees will be added by the end of 2014 to the vacant lot at Westport Terrace and Westport Road. These tree costs are being absorbed by Ecotech because of our city involvement in the Jefferson County League of Cities. One tree was added at Ambridge Circle in 2013.
  • Streets: It should be noted that some of our streets will need resurfaced in the next couple of years. There will be some patch applied this winter to a couple of pot holes.
  • Weather: The 1st quarter of 2014 was over extended with snow and ice removal as we received higher amounts of snow than normal. All in all, the entire fiscal year met budget
  • City Hall:  Great meeting space for our City Council, Block watch, and other city committee meetings. Windows were replaced throughout in 2014. Attic insulation will be added in 2015. These two improvements will decrease our energy bills.
  • LG&E Street Lights: 4 additional lights were placed throughout the city in 2014 to add lighting in dark spaces. 2 more additional lights are planned along with an evaluation of all the lights in the city by LGE. LGE will recommend either painting or replacing some of the worn caps. If you see one of our lights leaning or in need of repair, please contact the Mayor.

Make sure to check that the local government tax is going to Woodlawn Park on your insurance bills.......

Ordinance Number 3, Series 1990-1991 imposes a License Fee upon Insurance Companies for the privilege of engaging in the business of insurance within the corporate limits of the City of Woodlawn Park.  This includes homeowners, car insurance and first year premiums of life insurance.   This ordinance has been difficult to enforce because of the city dynamics and the number of insurance companies issuing policies. The problem has arisen where many residents are not making their insurance company aware of the proper direction of the tax fee.

Please help us solve this situation and help your city collect thousands of dollars that are being routed to St. Matthews or other municipalities in error.  Your insurance rates WILL NOT change.  This tax fee is already being paid as part of your bill.  It is merely a matter of misdirection of these funds.  You can simply call your insurance company or detach the cut-out below and attach to your next payment.

Print this out and attach to your next insurance bill payment, or call your insurance agent directly to advise of your correct local government.

Please properly direct the Local Government Tax for this customer to the City of Woodlawn Park, KY.  Zip Code is 40207.
