CITY DIRECTORY

Image

The City directory will be coming out in July. However, we know that the directory is only as good as the information in it.

All residents will soon receive a mailer with a directory information sheet. WE NEED EACH RESIDENT RENTER AND/OR OWNER TO RETURN THESE INFORMATION SHEETS- they will provide us with any updated information we need for the city directory.

Over the years, land lines are becoming obsolete and many people have only cell phones- we need this information especially in any emergency situation. So, please return these information sheets as quickly as possible. Mayor Brown has decided only to send out new directories every two years. But, we will have some extra printed up for new residents to receive. These new directories will have the approved city budget, addresses, names and phone numbers of residents, city contact information and a few reminders about sanitation and other city services. These directories will be in booklet form and easy to carry around.

CITY WIDE YARD SALE- MAY 10, 2014

Image

The City of Woodlawn Park city wide yard sale will take place on Saturday, May 10th. Make sure to turn in your sign in sheet as soon as possible.

Yard sale will begin promptly at 8:00am. We ask that all yard sale participants have their items out and ready by that time. In previous yard sales, visitors begin lining the streets of our city early. The official ending time will be 1:00pm. This is a great city event to get involved in as a resident. You will meet many of your neighbors and get rid of some of your treasures at the same time.

Yard Sale Sign Ups

Junk Day will be Thursday, May 8th!

Yes, this date is correct, we could not get junk day after the yard sale so you have to decide before the yard sale what to put out for junk day.  Remember, you can also donate your items to Goodwill instead of simply throwing it out.

FENCE, SHED AND BUILDING PERMITS

Make sure you contact Councilperson Tom Nunn at 893-0810 before constructing a fence, shed or any building. Permits are $10 and can be easily obtained by contacting Tom. UPDATE: There will be a 1st and 2nd reading of a amended shed ordinance at the upcoming April and May City Council meetings. The City Council felt like the shed ordinance needed some fine tuning. The Ordinance is expected to pass, be signed and approved by the Mayor.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

At the February meeting, Mayor Mike Brown challenged and encouraged all residents to abide by the Stop Signs and NOT to speed on the city streets. As temperatures warm more people will be out on the streets walking and enjoying the city. "Let's all model for our younger drivers and each other out there on how to follow the laws when it comes to driving" said Mayor Brown at the meeting.

Mayor Brown went on to say that Woodlawn Park has the lowest crime of any of our neighboring cities. Much of this can be attributed to having our own Police department and Police Chief Bob Heaton, but he is not superman, he cannot be everywhere all of the time, that's why its important for each of us to step up and stop at stop signs and not go over 25 mph in the city.

You might have noticed the District 7 mobile radar unit in the 4300 block of Westport Terrace. Let this be a reminder to all of us to slow down- please!

Stop signs- All drivers MUST come to a complete stop at all stop signs in the city. Please do not "roll through" the stop signs as this is a violation.

"Taken directly out of the KY Driver Manual": A stop sign is red with white letters and has eight sides. It means you must come to a complete stop in a safe position with regard to other traffic, then proceed when the way is clear. Stop at the pedestrian crossing area or stop line, if there is one; otherwise stop before moving into the intersection. When visibility is obstructed, a second stop may be necessary before entering the intersection.

VACATION HOUSE WATCHES
If at anytime you are going to be away from your house for an extended period of time, please call 574-5471 or 439-6545 (chief cell) to schedule a house watch! Our police chief makes this a priority and your home is checked on often.

A little bit of History....

Woodlawn Park was originally a land grant to Col. Gray from the King of England; however the good Mr. Gray lost the land in a gambling debt, which ironically, opened the door for the area to become a thriving place of business. The true history of the land started in 1858, when Robert Aitcheson Alexander, a renowned American breeder of Thoroughbred horses purchased the land and opened the Woodlawn Race Track in 1859. Robert was known as a land buyer for the National Horse Racing Association.

The Woodlawn Race Course drew national attention with visitors coming from all across the nation. This track became a very popular attraction and was the very first of its kind in the state of Kentucky. The ground thundered with the sound of horses running the track until the civil war.  Robert Alexander actually had Tiffany's design a special vase as a trophy. A replica of that very vase is still used today as the winner trophy at the Preakness Stakes. The original vase was said to have been buried during the war for safety, but was later dug up and has been preserved.

A Nice description of our City:

The City of Woodlawn Park, though rich in horse racing history, became a private community in Eastern Jefferson County in 1955. It is conveniently snuggled in between Westport Road and Shelbyville Road with expressway access to all areas of Louisville. This is a wonderful neighborhood that has its own Police Chief, Mayor and City Council, which provides the residents with security and ensures the upkeep of the area. They have an open council meeting available to all citizens on the third Monday of each month to discuss community events and resolve any issues.
